What the heck is a lanai? If you are new to visiting Florida, it seems everyone talks about their lanai. Isn’t it the same as a porch as we know them up north? Well, sorta, but not. Here is some interesting facts about lanais and why you will love yours when you move to Florida.
Is A Lanai A Porch?
Technically a lanai is a combination of a patio, porch and perhaps a veranda. Here in Florida, a Lanai is actually part of the architectural design of a house. This means the home designer and engineer have basically added an outdoor room. The floor is poured as part of the foundation of the house. They also have a roof, which is part of the house roof. I guess in the true sense of the build, a lanai is a room with screen walls in your home.
Whatever you really want to call it, these rooms are amazing. With the incredible weather year round, these rooms become an extension of your living space. Many people find these are their favorite rooms in the house!
Different Lanai Features
What there are different types? Really there are different styles and options, all of which you should consider when building your home. Lanai’s can be any size and layout you want and your engineer can get approved. Some are large enough to have pools included inside. Others can have glass walls and screens making it more of a four season room.
You can even have a combination of a lanai and and a pool cage. This allows you to have a covered area for relaxing while allowing your pool to be located in the full sun. Some homeowners have added outdoor kitchens in their lanai, complete with cooking hoods to vent the grill to the outside.
Should My New Home Have One?
Yes. A lanai adds value and each house is expected to have one. If you build a new home without one, you could be affecting the resale in the future. Not only do these amazing rooms keep bugs out, but they also keep out debris and unwanted guests. If you have a pool, under state law, you must have a fence around your pool. Lanai’s can typically be including in the fence requirements to keep people and animals safe around your pool.
